Composer: Tim Hinton, Michael Shuler
Total Time: 7:09
This exciting yet totally achievable composition is based on numbers and takes its idea from the movie about John Nash, a genius with numbers always running through his head. You can feel the helter-skelter inner workings, buried thoughts, and subconscious ideas coming through the music. “A Beautiful Mind” opens with “Codes and Patterns.” Through Tim Hinton’s frantic and staccato music your audience will be immediately drawn in. “Hallucinations” is a strange combination of ideas, and is an excellent production number. “Therapy” is just a short respite from all the chaos. Hinton’s music ends with an exhilarating and frantic climax titled “A Brilliant Madness.”
The brain is the center of the human nervous system, controlling our thoughts, movements, memories and decisions. This show has an unusual electric bass soloist, but this could be altered to be any bass instrument synthesizer. You could also delve into Schizophrenia - a mental disorder often characterized by abnormal thinking, hallucinations, delusions, and social withdrawal.
A possible visual concept could be to have guard members each with a particular number on their uniform and flag. As the show goes on the numbers get more and more crowded until they take over at the end. You could also use clear boards to write on as the show progresses with math problems and numbers being written on them, so that they also become more crowded as the show progresses.
As with any Center X Productions show, visual concepts can be changed to fit the needs of your group. This show offers many unique musical moments and ideas that would work well with many themes or guard ideas.
