Endeavoring to write three movements that convey a compelling positive outlook, Scott Hickey has created a simply superb composition with "State of Mind." "Simplicity" is easy to understand happy in its effortlessness. An extended drum features allows the winds to rest their chops. "Serenity" is clear, peaceful and tranquil with each section having the opportunity to express the melody. "Stability" evokes steadiness and sensible solidity with the use of mixed meter and solid scoring. Developing programs should enjoy the scoring. The pit parts create a bit more of a challenge but are cleverly written. "State of Mind" is a solid composition that is a refreshing entry into the world of marching band music!
