TWO-gether by Michael Pote, Jim Bailey

“Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” - Aristotle

The tragic story of Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Based on four “acts,” your field show can be a literal interpretation of Shakespeare’s epic poem. “Family Feud” sets the stage in a grand manner. Your audience will be instantly drawn in by the familiar phrases. “Star Cross’d Lovers” deftly sets up all of the interactions between the characters. And how could you forget the famous balcony scene? “Wherefore Art Thou?” brings all of the emotions to a head. “Sealed with a Kiss” pays homage to Romeo’s famous words “And with a kiss I die.” Michael Pote’s rousing ending will leave an emotional impact.

Although “TWO-gether” is based on the Romeo and Juliet story, you and your visual staff have permission to explore romances of all types. You do not need to be literal in your interpretation. There are myriads of famous couples (with both happy and tragic endings) that you are encouraged to use for inspiration.

MARIA/COOL (FROM WEST SIDE STORY)
Series: Esprit Marching Band
Composers: Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein
Arrangers: Jay Bocook, Will Rapp
Level: 3

Using an energetic and dynamic intro from “Maria,” this cleverly arranged opener then slips into the jazzy strains of “Cool.” Using plenty of unison lines, exposed sections for percussion, and even a shout chorus, this is an impressive chart without being too difficult to pull off. For an extra “cool” effect, have your color guard do the finger snaps.

ONE HAND, ONE HEART/AMERICA (FROM WEST SIDE STORY)
Series: Esprit Marching Band
Composer: Bernstein & Sondheim
Arrangers: Jay Bocook, Will Rapp

Starting with a hint of “Tonight,” the poignant “One Hand, One Heart” is scored in the woodwinds followed by a brief trumpet solo. This standout production number then segues into “America,” featuring the percussion section.
